About Joint Reconstruction Surgery
The principal goal of joint reconstruction surgery is to replace the rough surfaces of the arthritic joint with artificial, smooth, durable implants, which restores both motion and function and enables patients to return to active, productive lives. Most patients may be up and walking with assistive devices immediately after surgery!
In knee arthritis, the cartilage on the ends of the femur, tibia and patella bones (which come together to make the knee joint) is damaged. During a knee replacement surgery, the surgeon will remove the damaged cartilage from the arthritic knee and replace the surface with metal and plastic components that provide the patient with a new surface that prevents the bones from uncomfortably grinding together.
